Summer Ambassador Program: Day 2

Isle of Shoals, NH/ME

Ship’s Log written by students Lizzie, Teddy, Ace, Mycal, and Sabrina

August 2, 2024

Lizzie

Evening dear family! I know your probably upset for not receiving a ship's log yesterday, as apparently we're not all doing this every night. Anyway, while I love to pour my heart and soul into this, I have to hurry because people are waiting on me.

So, these last few days have been a doozy. I have been having to work a lot, simple things like going to the bathroom have become more complicated here, and I've been missing you guys dearly. However, I don't regret my decision because of the wonderful thing I was able to experience and the wonderful memories I've made. Please rest ashore I'm doing well and take care back home, you guys are the best family I could ask for.

Teddy

Evening everyone. Today is August 2nd 2024. We made our way from Gloucester, Massachusetts to Isles of Shoals, which is in the middle of the port river which divides New Hampshire and Maine. Which is very cool to be in two states at once. Tomorrow's plans are to go towards another port in Maine. Our daily schedules are pretty tiring honestly but from my previous year on Dennis Sullivan (from august 2023) I'm aware that this will be very tiring. But after a few days everything should be like a normal day for me and maybe some of others. We went swimming and fishing. 2 of the students got 2 fish today and let it go. Another student collected hermit crabs for fun and we brought some back as fishing bait with also 2 surprising sea snails which stick to things pretty well. Anchor watch is a pain honestly but a part of what we came here for, am I right? We ate some great food from our chef Jake. Today I also learned how to find the real north/how to figure out to make the real north into the magnetic north. It was fun to learn and fun to do. There is a lot of math involved though but that's the way of life, everything has to carry math either you don't see it or not. I've seen some old friends and old crew that knew and that has helped me though with everything. And also the new crew as well! The first day was stressful but I got to steer the boat on the first day which was very fun and I've just been counting down the days as they pass. I can’t wait to see my family and friends at home very soon just got a week and 2 days left. As my mother says. " Go out into the world every chance you have. You will make the best of everything even if your days are rainy." I carry thoughts thoughts in my head every day and miss her even more. I miss my dogs too they are my everything. As I sit here and type and think I realize that maybe this shall be my last year on the Dennis Sullivan as I know this would be a great getaway and give me more opportunities in the future. But I must put the sailing behind me. The memories I make here will always stick in my head for as long as I keep growing the Dennis Sullivan will always be my second home.

Ace
'nah'

On my journey to the Dennis Sullivan,
The ship where man reaches sea,

My mother texted,
Pleading to me.

But 'oh', did she plead too much,
that she did.
Wishing for me to make long journal entrees,
On my fine ocean's bit.

"Ace if you don't
It'll be the end for you
For the only thing that shall know your mouth,
Is sardines & crackers to you!"

And so I responded, as anyone would,
With their signature line, as a chief would
The word that she tarnished,
The word she dosen't want to hear,
A word that gives no information about me!

'nah' brings joy to her ears.

Sabrina

The first day was pretty easy, I came late however. I was here last year so I knew the basics. I was happy to see that one of my friends, Teddy from last years program was here as well. I settled in quick and made friends easily.  There's not much else to say for now, except that I'm having fun and I haven't gotten seasick yet.

Mycal

"It was cold last time I was here, surely it will be cold again this year." I think to myself 5 hours before waking up to more than 80 degree weather. Besides the almost minimal difference in temperature, everything is moving smoothly in terms of transitioning to living on the water. So far I haven't felt sea sick, but did feel incredibly cold in the surrounding waters, and been pooped on by a fish. Tell Leo I will clean his tank when I get back.
