Summer Ambassador Program (Day 8)
New Bedford, MA
August 9th, 2023
Today for breakfast we had sandwiches. I had a peanut butter sandwich. It was soooooo good! I help clean the head and held some ropes which I don’t know what they were called but I held them so they didn’t hit anyone in the face:) we came from Newport and we’re heading towards New Bedford. The first time we went to Newport it took 2 days but this time it only took 1 day! A couple of days ago we saw dolphins, it was so cool! Apparently today people saw a shark fin. We also saw jelly fish! I’ve had so much fun! It is hard work, but everyone is so nice. Another thing that is cool is seeing the stars at night it’s so beautiful! Anchor watch is so-so. There is anchor watch from 10:00-11:00pm and 11:00-12:00pm, also known has early and late watch. We’ve only had 2 rainy days. We’ve had some overcast but not much.

Yesterday we sailed from New London, CT to Newport, RI on our way back to Boston. We set sail and even set the raffee but the wind was blowing pretty hard and the water was pretty rough so we took in the headsails about halfway through our sail. Lots of people were seasick; the waves were as big as 10 feet tall and the Denis Sullivan had a tendency to roll anyways so it’s understandable. During the trip, the students did an all hands lesson on buoyancy and water quality. We anchored in the same cove that we anchored in the last time we were in Newport, but there wasn’t nearly as much boat traffic as there was last time. After we anchored we had a swim call; the water was pretty cold and the current wasn’t too strong so it was nice. I had gotten sunburnt earlier in the day so I was particularly thankful for the cool water. Next we will be docking in New Bedford where we have docking space so we won’t have to use the anchor.
