Sea Challenge (Day 3 & 4)

Great Misery Island to Gloucester, MA

July 23, 2023

This voyage has overall been a great time. The whole crew is incredibly welcoming and accepting towards others. Before this experience, I hadn’t sailed or even stayed overnight on a boat, but now, after being here for a few days and nights, I know how to steer the ship, clean the deck, and put up sails. On my first day, I was pretty nervous, not being able to have my phone and leaving my friends and family for a week. But now, I have made new friends and adapted to the environment. On the boat, you have chores to do three times a day, besides that, a lot of downtime. I have been able to read my book and take plenty of naps throughout the day. My favorite part of this boat is sleeping on the deck, and seeing the vast number of stars in the sky. Being out of contact from the world changes your perspective on life. Being able to observe the city skyline of Boston from way out in the ocean makes you think about how small we are compared to the world. Living on this boat has allowed me to see whales closer than I ever had before, and new types of fish that I would never have seen before. And although I do miss home a lot, I am greatly appreciative of this opportunity.

I had never sailed before this and basically knew nothing about how it worked. But as I wake up for day 4 I feel like I know a lot more about how to run the ship. I feel like there are multiple things I could do on my own without help. And the crew has been very helpful showing me how to do things. My favorite part of the trip is jumping off the boat and relaxing onboard. And even though the work can be hard,

I still enjoy the experience and it’s taught me a lot.

So far my experience on the Denis Sullivan has been very pleasant. I have met many new kids and have also learned new skills everyday so far. The food has been great and today we are going on an island then sailing to Gloucester. One thing that hasn’t gone well is sleeping but each night I get more and more sleep. Not having my phone has made me feel much better and going forward after this I am going to limit my time on my phone. Overall, this trip has been good and I have learned a lot too.
