Sail Portsmouth Sea Challenge 2022: Day 1

Long Island, Boston Harbor, MA USA

Today marks the first day of the trip. The Roseway greeted us in the harbor at eleven. The first event of the day was fueling. The ship pulled up alongside a dock and it began to top off its fuel supply. The ship had fuel, the crew was just making sure they had the maximum amount of fuel possible. As the gas was being pumped into the tank on the port side the student watches placed fenders. We acted as roaming fenders to ensure the boat didn’t scrape up against the dock. Once the boat was under way out of the harbor we finally settled into our three watch groups A, B, and C. These groups are there so we can be easily managed and so that we can work together to complete tasks more easily.

We learned all about the Roseway. This first day was heavier on the talking side as we learned so much. The Roseway has six main compartments these include the salon, fore peak, galley, fish hold, Foc’sle, and Main Salon. We got comfortable with where we were sleeping and learned all the nooks and crannies of the ship. The original plan was to head out to a harbor island and dock there. But there happened to be a party palooza that would have prevented sleep. Instead we anchored off Long Island and watched the sun dip behind the skyline of Boston.
