This morning was the start of a day to remember. When I woke up, I was filled with excitement for the upcoming boat adventure. I had heard stories from family and friends about the trip and what was soon to be my home for the next couple of days. I had a filling bowl of cereal before heading to the ferry. When I arrived at the dock, I had some butterflies in my stomach because of some nerves. I was assigned to a watch group, we had a small introduction with the crew and after gathering on the dock, we boarded the boat. Raising the sails took some teamwork, but after a couple, “Heaves and ho’s” we were under way.

After leaving the dock, we split up into our watches, A, B, and C. With our groups, we cycled between safety tours, normal boat chores, and more. Some people were assigned to the bow to watch for obstacles, some to the stern to steer with the captain. The safety tours contained some emergency exit drills, a tour of all the places containing fire extinguishers, life saving equipment, and other safety equipment. As well as these things, most people conducted a “boat check”, where we checked on water levels within the bilge, and wrote things in the log. We all learned how to tie some knots, raise the sails, and lots of other practical sailing advice.
