Gifft Hill Live-Aboard Program: Day 4 & Day 5

St. Thomas and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Thursday, March 23, 2023 and Friday, March 24th, 2023

Log written by Teddy and a Gifft Hill Student

On our last full day we had a breakfast of waffles, did our morning chores, and set sail for Saint Thomas. We did two rotations before having lunch. Lunch consisted of hotdogs, french fries, and watermelon, as well as veggie burgers on pita for the vegetarians. We then moved onto our third rotation. The decision was made to anchor outside Water Island instead of Christmas Cove because we would not reach  Christmas Cove until far too late. After anchoring at Water Island, we ate dinner. Dinner consisted of pork, broccoli, quinoa, and sweet potatoes. After dinner, chores were completed, and Cleo, Teddy and Willie, along with Ms Mikayla, wrote the Willy man, a much better version of the Wellerman. We did deckhand Olympics and A watch won, B watch (B standing for best obviously!) came in second place  after that it was time to have quiet ship and begin anchor  watches.

Denis Sullivan arrived back in St. John on Friday morning and program wrap up began. We had breakfast at anchorage to start the day, and it was delicious as always. Then the Mizzen was set while hauling up anchor. In true "ship, shipmate, self" fashion, the crew and students did a thorough cleaning of the ship before gathering in a final muster to debrief the program and say goodbyes. The final muster was a chance for everyone to give their last shoutouts, and talk about how we saw World Ocean School’s community values in action this week (teamwork, self worth, communication, and trust). What an exciting week on board Sullivan!
