Senior Summer Ambassador 2022: Day 8

Boston Harbor Islands, MA USA

Log Entry by A Watch (Rio, Lily, Falcon, Lain)

Friday, August 5, 2022

We started our day in Salem, MA and we had eggs and bacon for breakfast. Instead of doing morning chores, the students raised the sails alone while the crew did dishes. Then we went on active watch. Many of us went on the helm and had to avoid lots of lobster pots and A watch had R and R where they worked on the watch flags and reviewed knots. For lunch we had rice, soup, and chips. After that we landed in the Boston Harbor Islands and had swim calls with a kayak. Then we noticed that it was raining in Boston and then we all went inside and played cards and chess and had a lesson on signal flags by Meg Peters. For dinner we had chicken and corn bread muffins.

Then for the evening activities we had Olympics! This was a watch competition that included a pin chase, knot tying, dress the deck hand, then raising and striking the Jumbo sail. For the pin chase, C Watch took the win. Then the JWOs competed and Garrett won. Next we did knot tying where it was a tie between all the watches. Then the JWOs tied a knot called the highwayman’s cutaway and Garrett also won. Next we got to dress the deck hand where each watch had to put a full rain suit on a deck hand and they had to walk around the whole deck. Then for the JWO challenge, they had to dress themselves up in an immersion suit which is a safety thermal suit that floats. Lain won easily. Lastly each watch had to set the Jumbo sail and take it down. Though A watch didn’t win that round, we had the most fun doing it and took the time of 8 minutes and 29 seconds! B Watch won that game with a solid 5 minutes. The last JWO challenge was to do their best Captain Jack Sparrow run and AJ won. Overall C Watch won the Olympics but we all had fun in the end, and had a dance party afterwards. We went to sleep as we experienced our last night on the Roseway.
