Brooks School (Day 6)

Green Cay, St. Croix

1/25/25

Written by students Aram, Ben, Jiyu, Kyleigh, and Lauren

To end our endeavors on the Denis Sullivan, Darcie (the master of the galley) cooked up a mean red curry stew for dinner. The stew was the main course of the night while pineapple and coconut bread were the side dishes. That was the meal for dinner.

Before we were able to set sail the team needed a quick gym session and by that I mean hauling in the anchor. This was a seven person job in which we even had to switch out. The anchor is five hundred pounds and there is one hundred and something feet of chain. In other words it was an incredible group effort to pick up that heavy piece of metal from the ocean floor.

In the day, we went on a sail from Culebra, Puerto Rico to St. Croix. We were only able to put up one sail as we were sailing into the winds. We snacked on gold fish and trail mix in order to keep everyone happy. On the the rotations during the morning sail was the opportunity to sit out on the bowsprit as the boat traversed through the water. The sun seemed brighter and the wind was more refreshing. It is a very compelling view being able to look at the ship from that angle. We had rice and beans for lunch, followed with watermelon slices.

In the afternoon, we had deckhand olympics. It consisted of knot tying, balentine coiling, pin-racing, and a relay where we had to do some stuff with the bucket and seawater. By the end, all three watches were tied with a score of 10. To break the tie, all three watches had to sing sea shanties. ‘A’ watch won.

We finished our meals quickly as we were exhausted from an action-packed pool time where Cam and Hugh played an intense game of categories with Jojo. This pool time was then followed by a Sunday-best attire for our swizzle talent/comedy show on the ship. The acts could consist of many different things from songs and dances to sprite chugging and stats from our voyage. Each person got dressed up as we mentioned earlier in our least wrinkled and the least stinky clothes that we could find in our small bunks. We decorated an area of the ship with white christmas lights in order to set the scene for the acts of the passengers of the Denis Sullivan. We were tasked with our final chores for the night where group A had this wonderful log, B had galley cleanup and C had bowls. A group is delighted to present to you the final ship log of our trip. We are excited to talk to you all soon!
