Ashley Hall (Day 2)
Off the coast of Puerto Rico
3/30/25
It’s Sunday, the 3rd day of our journey and second day out at sea. It was a busy day with lots to learn, but I think for the most part we’re getting a handle of the routine. I woke up this morning after my 0000-0400 am watch with C watch. It was a little rough, and I think seasickness got to some people, but after putting out a breakfast of muffins and oatmeal, those of us off watch took the opportunity to sit on a deck box midships and catch up on journaling, sleep, etc. We had delicious Greek lentil soup for lunch (shoutout Matthew and his amazing chef skills), and then it was time for C Watch to be on. We started by sheeting out sails and putting preventers in place which was strenuous, but C watch tackled it like bosses.
Then it was time for the most dreaded task: galley cleanup. Despite the kitchen gear raining down on us and the nausea, we made it through. Then came the most exciting task of the watch: going out on the headrig. Emma, Katie, and I went out and it was indescribably cool. Hanging above the open sparkly blue ocean with a .5 perspective of the Denis Sullivan was sublime. After our watch, we had our first AH Scuttlebutt (our version of crew muster), and people shared some really good pearls and shoutouts. Then we went straight to Almanacs with the whole crew and each watch presented a white board with their category (engineering, weather/creature feature, navigation/astronomy). We had enchiladas for dinner and then it was time for some action. At 2000, both B and C Watches worked together to gybe. The stars were also 360 stunning views tonight! At the end of C watch, we gybed again and that was our day at OLP.
