Departure from Port Canaveral
Cape Canaveral, FL
11/11/24
Nothing better than an unexpected week in the Sunshine State! Last Monday, we arrived in Port Canaveral, Florida, to wait out some unsavory weather before making our way east to St. Croix. Today we are facing much better conditions as we set out toward the Virgin Islands.
Our time in Port Canaveral has been a combination of rest for the crew (it’s been a busy fall and it’s going to be an even busier winter), ship’s maintenance (there is never enough time to give Denny all the love she deserves!) and training for new crew members (my favorite part).
New crew have spent their week dockside learning how to splice and whip, drive the small boat, and plot a course, position, and three-bearing fix on the chart. They have each stood their first duty day and are mastering starting and securing the generator. In addition to their mariner’s skills, they’ve delivered their first “teach-backs” of World Ocean School lessons like Simple Machines and Sea Poetry and I can’t wait til we have students aboard for them to teach! I’m proud of all they’ve learned and excited for everything their time on board will bring.
Stay tuned for more updates from our voyage, and we’ll see you in St. Croix!
