Boston to Baltimore: Southbound Transit

Baltimore, MD

October 4th, 2023

Ship’s Log written by Program Manager Maddy Sandler

After a busy summer, the crew and I said our final goodbyes to Boston when we cast dock lines in the rain last Friday. It feels strange to leave after investing so much time and energy in our season there, but the anticipation of transit and returning to St. Croix holds much excitement.

For such a short trip we decided not to dog the watches, and I lucked out with my favorite dawn (0400-0800) and dusk (1600-2000) watch. By Saturday the skies began to clear and with relatively steady winds we set the raffee. This may have been the best few days of sailing Denny’s had all year! I hit my own personal high and low points all in one day on this transit; learning how to furl the raffee was a fun new skill (not my best work, definitely room for improvement) but getting sea sick was not so enjoyable (unusual for me but I’m chalking it up to cleaning the heads below deck on an empty stomach). We arrived in Baltimore on Monday after a quick and beautiful 3.5 day transit.

Baltimore has welcomed us and a handful of other tall ships with open arms. The last few days have been spent exploring the city, finishing up some small maintenance projects, and spending quality time with old and new friends from other ships. Tomorrow we leave for Norfolk as part of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
