Isles of Shoals, NH USA

Log Entry by Hannah (C Watch)

Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Today we started the day by not putting the sails up, but motoring to Isle of Shoals, which was 6 miles from our anchorage in Portsmouth. On our way we ate breakfast and did our morning chores. Once we arrived, we got off the boat and took a hike on Smuttynose Island.  On the island there were so many seagulls, and there was one tiny cottage on the island. Once we got back to the boat we got to go swimming. The water was freezing, but it felt nice since it was so hot. After swimming we had a late lunch, and our afternoon chores.

We went to Appledore Island and got to see the Isle of Shoals Marine Research Lab. We got a tour from our captain, because he worked there for 8 years, and he showed us around. There were some interns and they explained to us what they were working on. Most of them were researching the birds on the island, and one of them was looking at seals. Another was looking at how fishing lines and nets get caught around seals, and how to prevent that from happening. After our tour we went back to the boat for dinner and evening chores. Some of us decided to climb aloft! After our chores some of the people from the Marine Research Lab came over for a tour of the boat. As some of the tours were going on we started to play “Jeopardy”. It was a fun day getting to get off the boat to see and learn new things.
