Cuttlefish Sing-Along: Crew Training Voyage Day 4

Green Cay, St. Croix, USVI

Kevin

The following is a never-before-heard reimagining of the classic shanty "Barrett's Privateers" written from the perspective of a cuttlefish caught in Roseway’s wake as she sailed back to St. Croix from St. John:

Oh the year was 2022

(How I wish I wasn't spinning now)

For a boat came running toward the cay

Moving fast under propeller speed

Gosh darn them all

I was told I’d cruise the bottom of the sea eat some worms

Maybe some clams or mollusks too

But now the seas filled with cuttlefish spew

Oh I was searching Caneel Bay

(How I wish I wasn't spinning now)

For breakfast lunch and dinner too

Didn't see Roseway 'til my time was far too few

Gosh darn them all

I was told I’d cruise the bottom of the sea, eat some worms

Maybe some clams or mollusks too

But now the seas filled with cuttlefish spew

Now here I lay in my 23rd month

(How I wish I wasn't spinning now)

Its been 6 months since I left Green Cay

And I just made Caneel yesterday

Gosh darn them all

I was told I’d cruise the bottom of the sea, eat some worms

Maybe some clams or mollusks too

But now the seas filled with cuttlefish spew

Listen to the original here and sing along to Kevin's version yourself!
