“Time Moves Funny”: 2023 Crew Training Voyage Day 5

Caribbean Sea off Eleuthera, Bahamas

Log written by Maddy Sandler (2022 AmeriCorps Deckhand Educator and Program Coordinator)

Today is day 5 of transit, but it feels like it could be day 2 or day 10. Time moves funny on the boat underway. The 0800-1200 watch felt happily busy; dishes and galley cleanup, some time at the helm, a boat check here and there, and a project that involves learning new knots! I spent at least an hour tying multiple wall and crown knots, which felt very satisfying.

New and old crew mingled at lunch (delicious as always, thank you, Cookie), but old crew found ourselves lingering on a deckbox after the lunch rush. We have precious few days left to spend with each other and are trying not to take it for granted.

This afternoon consisted of seamanship lessons for the new crew, maintenance projects, bucket showers on deck and always, always a nap or two. The weather has been beautiful and the sea state calm as we sail through the Bahamas. It's the perfect afternoon to read on deck. The fishing lines are out, but no luck today so far. A pretty good day all around.

This transit marks the end of my year on board and brings it full circle as we get closer and closer to St. Croix. It feels pretty special to share the experience with the new cohort and deckhands. It's refreshing to see their excitement, energy and willingness to jump in.

Photos to come soon!
