Rachel grew up in Utah, where she developed a love for the outdoors by hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing. She studied biology and geology in college, with a one-year study abroad in Hawai'i to study marine science. It was there that she got her first taste of sailing--on a hand-crafted traditional va'a sailing canoe. A few years later, during her last semester at college, she signed up on a whim for a fun elective class that took her on board a tall ship in Southern California for 4 days. What she thought would be a fun way to get a college credit ended up touching her deeply. She fell in love with the ship, sailing, and reignited her passion for outdoor education. She couldn't wait to get back on the water after she graduated, and spent a year crewing that vessel before coming to World Ocean School. In her free time, Rachel enjoys writing fantasy stories, playing guitar, and board games.
