Dan is a Merchant Mariner/Engineer raised alongside S/V Denis Sullivan. His parents helped build Denis Sullivan, and Dan was a Sullivan “Schooner Days” youth summer camper during her construction at the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association shipyard. This inspired him to attend college at Great Lakes Maritime Academy of Traverse City, MI, to get a degree and train for a license as a 3rd Engineering officer. This is similar to a 3rd Mate for the engine room instead of navigation. Today with years of experience Dan has advanced to Chief Engineer of Unlimited Horsepower and Tonnage the highest USCG engineering license available. Chief engineer is a Merchant Marine rank equivalent to Captain in the engineering department. He has experience on over 25 unique ships and thousands of days at sea, is a member of the M.E.B.A. Marine Officers Union, and volunteers with several other tall ship organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Maritime from Ferris State and a Marine Engineering Technology degree from GLMA/NMC.
Dan has experience with all mechanical/electrical systems on vessels our size up to cargo ships over 1000 ft in length and 120,000 shaft horsepower. He has worked on oil tankers, containerships, bulk carriers, passenger/cruise ships, and research vessels, with diesel, steam turbine, and reciprocating steam engines. Dan's tall ship experience includes Bark Europa, Oliver Hazard Perry, Schooner Madeline, Sloop Welcome, and Brigantine Gazela Primeiro. Aboard Sullivan, he was valuable in making repairs after her long COVID layup.
He has seen all 7 continents by ship, and Dan's inland rivers trip aboard Sullivan through the heartland of America was one of the highlights of his life. With World Ocean School he advises on engineering, helps with vessel improvements, and wherever he is needed. He thinks cats are “just purrfect machines” and the best shipboard pets.
