2023 AmeriCorps Crew Training: Day 1

St. Petersburg, FL

On Monday, we welcomed aboard six new crew members. Together, they will serve as our 2023 cohort of AmeriCorps Deckhand Educators aboard the Denis Sullivan. Yesterday was their first day of dockside training in St. Petersburg. They will receive two days of intensive dockside training before departing on a sail training voyage from St. Petersburg, FL to St. Croix, USVI.

Log Written by 2023 AmeriCorps Deckhand Educator Ashley Showalter

The morning started with dolphin sightings and (allegedly) a manatee. (The writer of this log was not witness to this. Maybe tomorrow.) Many of the new crew spent the morning acclimating to the ship and absorbing as many new terms and skills as possible. This included effective communications strategies, a rock-paper-scissors tournament, and properly belaying lines on pins. The evening involved conceptualizing each member’s position in the upcoming transition to, not only St. Croix, but a new crew as well. Captain Flansburg reviewed safety protocols and equipment before dinner.
