Welcome back to Meet the River Crew, in which I will take the liberty of introducing you to each member of our crew, in no particular order. Here’s the rules:

Hometown Where did you grow up? Where do you call home?

First Boat What was the first boat you can remember sailing/motoring/paddling on? What was the first boat you joined as a crew member?

Best Wildlife What was the best wildlife you’ve ever seen on a boat?

Best Food What was the best food you’ve ever eaten on a boat?

Not Boats What is something you do or have done in your life that isn’t boat-related? Something that you care about, a hobby, a past job or experience…

Boat Pet If you could have any boat pet, what would it be and what would you name it?

Here we go!

Jake Walker

Cook

Jake has been part of our crew since May 2022.

Hometown Southeastern Massachusetts

First Boat First boat he stepped aboard was his family’s lobster boat Solitaire; his first boat as crew was Roseway; and the first schooner he sailed on was Westward as a passenger

Best Wildlife Dolphins off the stern in the fog in the Gulf of Maine aboard Roseway

Best Food Steamed clams in Eastport, ME provided by World Ocean School charter guests—or grilled cheese on the Long Island Sound ferry

Not Boats Jake once participated in the nationals of French bocce and belonged to Les Mistral Petanque (Bocce) Club

Boat Pet A night heron named Barrett

Brianna Lusher

Day Mate

Brianna has been World Ocean School’s Chief Mate since May 2022.

Hometown Carthage, NY

First Boat A little 30-ft research vessel in college; her first boat as crew was Sound Waters out of Stamford, CT

Best Wildlife Once when she was coming into L.A. harbor, there was a grey whale less than 10 ft from the boat—she was also once climbing aloft on Lady Washington in Monterey Bay with humpback whales so close they were spraying her in the face

Best Food One of the cooks she worked with on Lady Washington, Nick Clanton, made the best sandwiches ever, and somehow they were different every day

Not Boats Traveling to see new places and meet new people

Boat Pet Her own two cats, Ghost and Spec
