Welcome back to Meet the River Crew, in which I will take the liberty of introducing you to each member of our crew, in no particular order. Here’s the rules:

Hometown Where did you grow up? Where do you call home?

First Boat What was the first boat you can remember sailing/motoring/paddling on? What was the first boat you joined as a crew member?

Best Wildlife What was the best wildlife you’ve ever seen on a boat?

Best Food What was the best food you’ve ever eaten on a boat?

Not Boats What is something you do or have done in your life that isn’t boat-related? Something that you care about, a hobby, a past job or experience…

Boat Pet If you could have any boat pet, what would it be and what would you name it?

Here we go!

Andrew Sanchez

2022 Americorps Deckhand Educator and Steward

Andrew has been part of our crew since December 2021.

Hometown Phoenix, Arizona

First Boat Roseway was Andrew’s first boat ever AND his first boat as crew!

Best Wildlife A sunfish floating near surface—seen while at anchor in Boston Harbor earlier this fall

Best Food Jake’s Anzac biscuits (which he made on this very transit!) or Ger’s poke bowls

Not Boats Andrew was a Peace Corps volunteer in Rwanda in 2019-2020

Boat Pet Anteater to eat any ants that try to stow away on board and eat our food

Sienna Broglie

2022 Americorps Deckhand Educator

Sienna has been part of our crew since December 2021.

Hometown Churchton, Maryland

First Boat Sienna’s parents met while they were each living on their own sailboat—as a “wee baby” she sailed on her dad’s boat, Jezebel

Best Wildlife Whales, dolphins, marine mammals

Best Food Another vote for Ger’s poke bowls from the spring northbound transit*

Not Boats Climbing and mountaineering

Boat Pet A skunk named [depends on skunk’s personality]

*Ger, if you’re reading this—hi!

Geoff Geis

Second Mate

Geoff sailed with us once before, as a relief mate in 2019. It’s great to have him back!

Hometown Newark, Delaware—not to be confused with Newark, NJ

First Boat Geoff’s first time on a boat was on the U.S.S. Alabama in July 1989— (he hopes to perhaps see her again when we arrive in Mobile!) But before that, his actual first time on a boat was on German destroyer Schleswig-Holstein, which made a port call in Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia when he was an infant—as the story goes, he christened the ship by throwing a glass milk bottle down on deck. His first time as crew was on the water taxi in Baltimore Harbor in late 2013, and then a year later he started on his first tall ship, the Spirit of New Zealand—he has lived on 14 ships now, and counting.

Best Wildlife Too many good options—hammerheads in New Zealand? Orcas? His final pick is a bright blue, black, and white striped flying fish he saw on Corwith Cramer—it came up in the net and it was so cute that he named it Kev-o after one of the watch officers on board

Best Food Geoff says he’s always eaten well on every ship—Jake’s stuffed pizza the other night was a recent highlight. But in the end of 2015 on Kalmar Nickel, while the crew was watching Amadeus, his shipmate Shay made Capezzoli di Venere, the dessert that Salieri offers to Mozart’s wife in the movie, which are Roman chestnuts in brandied sugar. They were so good that Geoff still has the fork that Shay bent trying to get the chestnuts out of the pan as a souvenir.

Not Boats Geoff loves music and plays around with a bunch of different instruments—he has aspirations to study it more seriously when he has a chance to get off boats for a longer chunk of time. He also loves fountain pens

Boat Pet A great horned owl named Doppler
