Welcome back to Meet the River Crew, in which I will take the liberty of introducing you to each member of our crew, in no particular order. Here’s the rules:
Hometown Where did you grow up? Where do you call home?
First Boat What was the first boat you can remember sailing/motoring/paddling on? What was the first boat you joined as a crew member?
Best Wildlife What was the best wildlife you’ve ever seen on a boat?
Best Food What was the best food you’ve ever eaten on a boat?
Not Boats What is something you do or have done in your life that isn’t boat-related? Something that you care about, a hobby, a past job or experience…
Boat Pet If you could have any boat pet, what would it be and what would you name it?
Here we go!
Hometown Milwaukee, WI, also Denis Sullivan’s hometown!
First Boat Dan grew up up sailing with his dad in Peoria, IL and Milwaukee; his first boat as crew was the commercial cargo ship M/V Calumet when he was a cadet at Great Lakes Maritime Academy
Best Wildlife He saw penguins in Antarctica when he was there on the Bark Europa
Best Food Christmas dinner on the St. Mary’s Challenger, a 112-year-old Great Lakes freighter; at the time he was aboard it was still running a reciprocating steam engine and had very old-style living accommodations on board (and a very nice meal at Christmas)
Not Boats Swing dancing—in fact, he went dancing in Chicago the night before we started this transit!
Boat Pet A cat named Dog
Dan grew up in Milwaukee during the building of the Denis Sullivan, and both of his parents contributed to her construction as volunteers. A Coast Guard-licensed marine engineer and a graduate of Great Lakes Maritime Academy, he became an active volunteer himself after the COVID-19 reduced the ranks of her regular crew. He’s been an invaluable resource to our crew in preparing the Sullivan for transit.
Hometown Bloomfield, New Jersey, a place he hopes never to return to
First Boat His dad’s 12’ fiberglass sailboat, an Alcort minifish (a short run of sailboat produced as a smaller version of the Sunfish); his first time as crew was as a 1-week volunteer on Mystic Whaler; the first time he was paid to work on a boat was as an apprentice on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
Best Wildlife Rob’s best wildlife sighting was the very first time he saw dolphins—it was on the west coast in transit from Westport, WA to San Francisco on Hawaiian Chieftain
Best Food “Anything that Jake makes”—but a close second would be foie gras on the schooner Shenandoah, made by cook Nick Clanton during an end-of-season charter
Not Boats Rob has a degree in Marine Science—he’s particularly interested in deep ocean currents and chemistry
Boat Pet An Octopus named Grips to keep him company (and lend a hand or 8) in the engine room
