Colorado Springs School (Day 1)

Gallows Bay, St. Croix

Last night, we departed from CSS at 2000 hours Mountain Standard Time on the dingy yellow Durham Bus Services bus to head from our school campus to Denver International Airport. As we passed the Bluecifer statue, we bonded over singing Disney songs and sharing stories; we felt ready to fly. We took two flights: first from Denver to the Miami International Airport (some of us did not enjoy the airport), where we had a four hour layover at 0600 hours Eastern Standard Time and passed that time by playing cards, writing journal entries, and exploring Concourse D to find food. Then, we flew from MIA to St Croix International Airport, where our journey really began.

From STX, we took a jaunt and gallivanted in vans to the pier. Along the way, we learned about the history of St Croix, including the economy of the oil refineries and the seven flags which have flown over the island. Some of us were also quite confused by driving on the opposite side of the road, including not understanding the differences in left and right turns between here and our hometown of Colorado Springs. Once we arrived at the pier, we met the World Ocean School crew with name games and separated into our watch crews.

Tonight’s Ship Log crew is Crew B, otherwise known as The Business Crew, because we stand on business (for real, for real). We were filled with great heel-clicking jolliness and whimsy as we stepped onto the Denis Sullivan for the first time and underwent our onboarding rotations. This included making our bunks, filling out surveys, checking in with the crew about medications, and having a delightful fruit snack. Then, we went through vessel orientation, which made us slightly businessly fashionably late to muster. After a tasty dinner of cheesy pasta bake and some of the best bread we’ve ever had (it was focaccia, by the way), we got to work on our evening chores, which for The Business Crew, was writing this Log! We are all so excited to be on the ship, as we have repeatedly said out loud, and we are hoping to make up a little bit of sleep in between our night watches due to our red eye flight.
