Thanksgiving on the Sea: Day 4

Culebra, Puerto Rico

11/27/24

Written by B Watch Students

Today was a wonderful and exciting day with sailing. We waked up and have a good breakfast with slices of ham and muffins (chocolate inside, them tests so great!) to get enough energy for today. We begin to sail at 1000, after cranking the heavy chains and anchor by Aiden, Howard, Tobias, and Henry (me) like doing more than hundreds of push up. B watch(Aiden, Henry Howard) was on duty for the morning sailing. I control the steering first without the engine. The wind is strong and waves are high, just like want to destroy our boat, and it’s hard for me to keep our boat on the line, but I made it. Then, after the boat leaving St.John, Captain turn the engine on. Around 1200, after enjoying the lunch, A watch (Amy Anji, Samson, Tobias) take off watch. Also, all of them have a try to climb on the head-rig which is at the very front of the boat, and learn about more knots on that. Then, people have a nice and easy nap with sunshine on the deck. Around 1500, we arrived at Culebra, and crews test the sea water was good enough to have a swim, so pool is open! Everyone jump onto the sea and have fun. To the end the day, we have a scrumptious chicken coconut curry and nice white rice as the dinner.

Today was another eventful and exhausting day, just like any other. Wake ups and breakfast was the usual time, being at 0730 and 0800. Breakfast was delicious, with eggs, sausage, slices of meat, and chocolate chip muffins on the menu (the muffin enjoyers all had too much to eat). We set sail at 1000, after setting sails and cranking up a few thousand pounds of chain and anchor 6 inches at a time. Shoutout to Aiden, Howard, Tobias, Samson, and Henry for that intense session of cardio. After setting sail, the crew split into different watches, B watch (Henry, Aiden, Howard) were on active duty first, taking turns steering the vessel and doing hourly boat checks, while A watch (Amy, Anji, Samson, Tobias) were off watch and tying knots on the headrig (The ropy part at the very front of the boat). At 1200, stew and salad was served, and A watch took over active duty. The afternoon was quite relaxing, more than half of the students were on deck and out for the count after duties. We arrived at Culebra at 1500, and went for a chill swim and had some volleyball action going in the water. To end the day, a scrumptious chicken coconut curry and rice was served for dinner, and was absolutely cleaned up by the crew who then split up into dinner and head (toilet) cleanup.
