Friends Forever International (Day 2)
Provincetown, MA
August 22nd, 2023
So far on the boat, it’s been pretty calm but today when we set sail the waves got really big. At first we were all having a really fun time. All of us were watching the waves crash against the side of the ship. Some of us were seeing how long we could stand up without grabbing on to anything. But then the dreaded sea sickness overcame about half of my team. Me and my friend have been helping the crew more while the rest of us help the sick. Now we’re on our way to Salem. All I can do is hope I don’t get sick.
Best wishes,
Carson
The day started with waking up at 1:48am to start anchor watch, and we ended it at 3:12am. Anchor watch is a time where you check on a boats pumping and the anchor to make sure it doesn’t drag. Today the second watch realized the anchor did drag a bit, but it was all set afterwards.
There was a bit of rain coming down, but stopped halfway through the watch. The the wind picked up, enough to blow anything left on deck away (which is what happened to my towel).
After anchor watch our morning muster (meeting) started at 7:45am. Today we are mainly focused on sailing because of the strong wind.
We pulled up the 500 pound anchor together using the windlass and hauling rope, then started our journey to the Harbor Islands.
On our way out we got to witness at least a hundred seals on the beach in PTown. It is really cool to see a bunch of ocean creatures. We saw some squid’s last night and jellyfish too!
We had a couple activities planned today, but they all got scratched as soon as we left PTown.
The waves got to be at least 10ft tall and caused the boat to constantly move back and forth. Many people (including me) fell seasick to the waves and currently are still recovering.
We all do our best to take care of each other and shout-out to Hannah, Eva, and Francie for taking care of me.
So far, the boat trip has been fun, amazing, and quite the experience.
There’s nothing like waking up to the sounds of the ocean, setting sail, watching the sunset, and being able to coil rope.
I’m looking forward to the new things throughout the week.
