Sail Portsmouth Sea Challenge 2022: Day 7

Gloucester, MA USA

Log Entry by Benton, Mikhail, Cecilia (A Watch)

Friday, July 22, 2022

We woke up today at 7:45 am which is a nice late wake up. We were in Rockport. We hauled up anchor right away and because of the poor wind we motored past Thatcher Island to Gloucester. We had a final day swim call and hung out in the water playing ball! Also at this time we saw Roseway’s sister ship Adventure sail by. After swim call we had lunch and then during dishes got ready to go on land. We got onto the dinghies and drove into Gloucester. Once on the dock we got a tour of schooner Adventure. We noticed that Adventure was really similar to Roseway but it was much wider and there was no bowsprit. Adventure has much more space than Roseway below deck and seeing the differences and similarities was cool. Then we walked in the sweltering heat and went to an ice cream shop. With delicious ice cream in hand the group split into playing on a field, and walking further into town. At the field we played basketball and tried to get in many half court shots, and into town we checked out a cool bookstore. We got another look at a different schooner, the Thomas E Lannon which was really pretty and had a cool compass in a beautiful glass case. Then we met up at the dock to get back on Roseway. We ate buffalo chicken mac and cheese, and then did our evening chores. We then had a few minutes to train for the deckhand olympics that were taking place that evening. After the opening ceremony we had the events which included knot tying, finding pins, blindfold bucket toss, and dressing a deckhand. We were all tied by 1 point, but in the end B watchgroup won! After that we had jumbo setting races where everyone went up and tried to raise the jumbo sail by themselves. The shortest time of the night was 29 seconds with a group of 4 students. Then we put on some music and started fishing for some squid and one squid was caught, but we did release it in the end. After that we all hangout until nighttime. Some people slept on deck.
