Turning Challenge into Opportunity

Turning Challenge into Opportunity

Executive Director Eden Leonard

Dear Friend,

I hope this finds you and all your loved ones well.

I was reminded recently that John F. Kennedy said, “When written in Chinese, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity." During the COVID-19 crisis of 2020, World Ocean School did what it does best: turning even the most daunting challenges into opportunity.

World Ocean School always finds a way. In 2020 we took every opportunity to innovate while maintaining commitment to our values. We launched four new programs: World Ocean School at Home (virtual education programming), World Ocean School Dockside (immersive, family-friendly activities), Junior Crew Caribbean Classroom (nine-week live-aboard experience), and Frederiksted Community Days (providing access to the most underserved area of USVI). We found ways to keep students safe and healthy during traditional live-aboard voyaging programs and even occasionally broadcast virtually into classrooms that could not get on board Roseway

We have operated through the entire pandemic, while upholding the strictest standards for quarantining and sanitation. While other ships in the fleet stayed hunkered down, covered in plastic, we worked harder than ever, sailing Roseway over 11,400 miles since the pandemic began. Our goal, as always, was to make the biggest difference in our Boston and St. Croix communities. Our unwavering commitment meant we were able to impact hundreds of students and families!

We have worked Roseway hard this year, but she also received great care through our new collaboration with Mystic Seaport. Our recently-completed yard maintenance period was not only another investment in Roseway’s continued preservation, it was also an investment in our crew, who were able to learn alongside the industry’s finest with access to world-class resources and expertise.

We have accomplished so much in the midst of this pandemic year, and I am proud of our resilience, our incredible team, and the opportunity to steward our beloved Roseway together with an outstanding community!

Please consider a generous contribution today to help support our continued innovation towards a vibrant future. Thank you for helping to ensure World Ocean School stays creative, resilient, and ready to support our amazing communities. We can’t do this without you!

With gratitude and continued optimism,

Eden Marie Leonard
