Perspective is Powerful

Executive Director Eden Leonard

Dear Friend,

We hope this letter finds you and your family well and looking forward to a new season. These times are certainly challenging, but we at World Ocean School are continuing to find reasons to smile.  We are reaching out to our community to share news of our great accomplishments aboard our historic, and well-loved schooner, Roseway, and to ask for your support so that we can continue to deliver the vast range of programs that constitute World Ocean School.

While the impact of the pandemic continues to be felt, we have been remarkably fortunate this year in broadening the impact of our mission and serving the needs of our students. Where last summer we had just one lone voyage, with 7 students, this summer brought 4 multi-week trips for over 60 students! Our Summer Ambassador program alone had Roseway hosting 27 students from New England, Oregon, North Carolina, Texas, and the Virgin Islands!

We were thrilled to have the support of Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey, reopening Boston Harbor aboard Roseway. The Mayor graciously engaged with our students before casting off Roseway’s lines and setting them off on their sail, ceremoniously launching 2021 HarborFest weekend!

We had many great sails and events with our neighbors who we are proud to have as our partners:

  • Nurturing Fathers
  • We Belong
  • Waypoint Adventures
  • The Boys and Girls Club of Metro South
  • Higher Ground
  • Piers Park Sailing Center
  • Sposato Graduate School
  • Gloucester Schooner Fest / Maritime Gloucester
  • The American City Coalition

We also hosted sails for events like Adventure Sail Day, promoting access to sailing for young women and girls from under-served communities. We celebrated with groups aboard for Black Joy Day and Pride Week, celebrating inclusivity and diversity in our communities. We hosted nearly 600 individuals in Gratitude Sails for teachers and essential front line workers to honor their contributions in the pandemic, and welcomed 72 newly naturalized U.S. citizens and their families.

Alumni of our program shared the impact from their voyages from years past, including one beaming with pride about heading off to college out of state because of the confidence they gained in the program aboard Roseway!

None of this can happen without your generous support, and we never want to turn away a deserving student simply because of finances. Our impact is growing and our reach is extending beyond our old neighborhoods and familiar coastlines. In the last month alone we developed programs with new partners in Maine; The Ecology Learning Center, The College of the Atlantic, Maine Ocean School, and the Community School of Mt. Desert Island. Later this month we’ll be teaming up with the Annapolis Maritime Museum, and afterward exploring new partnerships in Charleston, SC as well, before returning to our beloved winter home for our 15th year of public school programming in St. Croix! Demand is increasing and the deserving students are many. We need to equally grow our family of donors; ones who can help us provide the positive space our students need to stretch their comfort zones and realize their potential and self-worth.

If you have been aboard Roseway with us, you know how much easier it is to raise sails with more hands on the line. This is a transformational learning opportunity for students with incredible deckhand educators. Will you join us in creating that transformational experience for our students? Whether you make a one time donation today, or set up a sustained monthly giving plan for a set amount each month, your gift will help to give students a once in a lifetime experience aboard Roseway - a classroom that they will never forget. Make a donation today, and be a changemaker in the lives of our students.

Grateful for your partnership and support,

Eden Marie Leonard
