Ocean Classroom 2020: Day 13

Ocean Classroom 2020: Day 13

Gloucester Harbor, Gloucester, MA

Sunday, September 21st, 2020

It has been a crazy couple of days. Today was our third full day on the boat and somethings are beginning to feel more like routine. I had watch this morning from 6am to 7am and I saw finish rising. It is very pretty being in Gloucester harbor however I think everyone is excited to get underway and experience sailing watch.

After doing the morning chores and having breakfast we began working on making ditty bags. Ditty bags are made out of old sail and used to hold tools. It is quite a bit of work to poke and needle through the tough sail material. Therefore my progress was very slow and steady. This afternoon we went sailing again and practiced tacking. Today was windier than yesterday so it was exciting to be aboard the ship while it was moving quickly. I think I am beginning to get to know the lines on the boat a bit better and starting to know what to do when. However my hands are beginning to callus from hauling on lines. Today was yet another full and busy day. I am excited as tomorrow we are hopefully going to head north to Maine.
