Today our core value was immersion, and what better way to immerse ourselves than by jumpin’ into the crystal blue water alongside some turtles? But before we could begin our day, our underclassman took charge with breakfast and chores. Once we finished our chores, we powered up the engines and made our way to a turtle sanctuary. After our dip with the various marine creatures, we hopped back onto Roseway and set sail back to St. Thomas. In the true spirit of immersion, several students climbed aloft while we were underway. Before we reached our final destination, we used the skills we had acquired during the week to compete against other watches in the Deckhand Olympics. The events included knot tying, the pin-dash, and rope coiling. After a healthy dose of competition, we sat down to a delicious dinner and an (unhealthy) ice cream/brownie party after finding out that B Watch had won. We have now packed our bags and are sitting in a harbor on St. Thomas, ready to board the airplane tomorrow morning. This has been a deeply rewarding experience, and although our bodies took a physical toll, our spirits stayed as high as the main gaff-topsail through the bonding experiences we’ve shared. While our week is coming to an end, we will use the skills we’ve learned for years to come.
