Ocean Classroom 2017: A Fulfilling Close to a Successful Program

San Juan, PR

November 18, 2017: After a hilarious talent show, award ceremony, and slideshow to top off a phenomenal voyage, students took to the deck in their hammocks for one last sleep aboard Roseway. Feels like just a moment ago we were shuffling student’s bags onboard in the rain back in Boston, and it was nostalgic for all to see students send their bags from the Fishhold and Foc’s’le to the dock for their departure. Final musters, countless hugs, tough goodbyes, one final shanty, and a tear or two shed by crew and students alike, and a trip to San Juan airport brought Ocean Classroom 2017 to a fulfilling close. What a successful program...from students overcoming fears and challenges daily, reaching a comfort level with ambiguity, learning at all hours of the night and day, seamlessly transitioning from a peer to a leader as Junior Watch Officers, and experiencing the beauty of the sea as a group. It’s been a pleasure to watch these students grow into confident, competent sailors, shipmates, and family.
