Summer Learning Voyage: Day Thirteen

Boston Harbor Islands

Max Ehrmann & Zenobia Houston

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
Gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
No less than the trees and the stars;
You have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

(Desiderata) - Max Ehrmann

The last 13 suns and moons gifted us early mornings to reflect on how powerful dawn can be when your mind combines with others. They gifted us physical challenges, two-ton sails, lines held by Zeus himself, proving that determination paired with many eager hands are strong enough to face even the Gods. As we rode the waves, above the stunning, stoic ocean, she whispered tales of courage, community, and confidence into our souls. In return we opened our hearts. We control our destinies; and the helm of life lies in our hands. The men and women who boarded the Roseway only two weeks ago no longer exist. In their place are sailors navigating the universe, ready to raise our sails for whatever adventures rest ahead. Like the dry petals of an aged rose, our days have shed. Like the rose’s scent our lessons, memories, community, and relationships will live on forever. We are strong. We strive for growth. We chose adventure despite society’s pull to remain stagnant, comfortable; and now we can never turn back.

For the ears who will hear our stories and the eyes who will read our words, take this as our omen to stop and smell the roses.

Thank you Roseway,

Zenobia Houston
