Summer Learning Voyage: Day Four

Erin M.

Hey from Roseway,

Today marks our fourth day aboard. Each day, we are all becoming more and more acclimated to the sailor life. In only three days, we have learned an immense amount of new things, such as the boat’s anatomy and common terms, how to navigate our location using landmarks, how to steer the helm (the ship’s wheel), how to raise and drop all of the sails, and even more. We even helped put on the brand new 2,000 lb main sail! Not only are we learning new material everyday, but we are also learning to expand our comfort zones. For example, sharing two bathrooms between 30+ people; showering in the ocean and even facing our fears. This afternoon I faced my fear of heights as I shimmied on a rope to furl the jib, over the ocean. My favorite part of all is to be a part of this community. The way all of us care for, look out for, and help each other is amazing to see and feels even better to be a part of. I am extremely grateful to be able to bond with and build friendships with my fellow BDEA students and to be able to learn from such a resilient, intelligent, talented, patient pro-crew. This experience has truly been mind-opening, eye-opening, and heartwarming. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this voyage has in store for us... but I totally can, if you know what I mean.

Catch ya back in the Bean.
