2016 Summer Ambassador Program: Exploring and Working on Appledore Island

B Watch: Kenny, Shane, Ammiel, Gianna, Phillippe, Denny

We have now been on our adventure for five days. Today we took a short boat ride over to Appledore Island and got to learn about marine life and help with an ocean clean-up. We got to learn how much the pollution affects islands and got a tour of the building where we saw a really cool minke whale. Cleaning up the debris was really cool and it made some of us feel like we were making a difference. The seagulls living on the island were everywhere and they are very protective of their fluffy baby chicks. After our work, we got to take a tour of some of the island. We found a large area of rocks and ocean where we sat down and just took in all of our surroundings. Once we were done with our work and our exploring, we shuttled everyone back over to the ship. We set up for lunch and then devoured a tasty meal of PB&Js, popcorn, and fruit. Once that was all cleaned up we all took our first swim in the ocean. For some of us, this was the first time swimming in this cold of waters. Their toes were frozen and it made it hard to breathe, it also made them appreciate the waters back home and miss their ocean. But that was how we showered so we fought through it and kept on jumping in. Once you jumped in enough, the water wouldn’t seem that cold. After we were done with our showers/swims, we got ready to set sail. We sailed three hours up the coast of Maine and saw some really cool lighthouses. We anchored and took down all the sails. Once everything was in shape, we set up dinner. We’ve now finished our nightly chores and are ready for a long nights’ rest with full stomachs and tired eyes.
