Will Burke

Deckhand Educator

Hometown: Moultonborough, NH

School: Middlebury College

Previous sailing experience: I grew up around boats, beginning with a year spent sailing with my family when I was five years old. In 2011, I was a student on Ocean Classroom’s Discovery Semester on board the Harvey Gamage. In 2012-2013, I returned to Gamage for five months, this time as a Deckhand and Bosun.

Previous teaching experience: I have taught Sailing, Canoeing, and Waterskiing at Camp Deerwood in Holderness, NH. I also spent several semesters in college working as a Teaching Assistant for various geology courses.

Hobbies: I enjoy trail running, mountain biking, hanging out in hammocks and talking about rocks.

Why I’m excited to work for World Ocean School: Sailing on board traditionally rigged schooners has a unique way of providing alternative ways to view our world. Living in an environment where our surroundings are in a constant state of change forces us to learn to trust our shipmates and to adapt quickly. Many who sail with World Ocean School take away valuable skills that are applicable far beyond the world of sailing, and I feel privileged to be part of it all.
